Francesca Branzoli studied Physics at the University of Pavia, Italy (2002-2007). From 2007-2010 she did her Ph.D. in the field of Solid State Physics in the same university. Her Ph.D. thesis focuses on the magnetic properties of a novel class of rare-earth Single Molecule Magnets, investigated using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Muon Spin Rotation and magnetization measurements.

From 2011-2013 she worked as post-doc at the CJ Gorter Center for high field MRI of the Leiden University Medical Center. Her research activity focused mainly on the development of diffusion-based magnetic resonance spectroscopy (DW-MRS) methods at 7T for the characterization of tissue microstructure and function, to be applied to basic neuroanatomical investigations in healthy subjects, as well as to neurological disease models.

Since September 2013, Francesca has been employed at ICM as MR Physicist. One of her main tasks is the development of new sequences for magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and imaging, in both clinical and pre-clinical settings. She works on the implementation and optimization of diffusion-weighted spectroscopy techniques to be used for studying several brain diseases, including brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, Huntington disease, and ischemic stroke.

In addition, she set up a robust and reliable MRS method for the in vivo detection of 2-hydroxyglutarate and other metabolites that accumulate specifically in brain tumors.
